Swim program under way
by Kate Uebergang
VacSwim '98 began on Monday with about 1,500 Children throughout the Riverland enrolled in this year's program.
Classes will run until January 15.
The program is conducted by qualified instructors throughout the region with pool programs running at Loxton, Berri, Renmark and Waikerie.
At Barmera, classes are being held in Lake Bonney.
Classes are also being held at the Brown's Well Area School pool.
Children enrolled are aged from five to 18 and are taught a variety of water skills.
Beginners commence by learning basic water confidence skills and children are taught up to the highest level of water rescue.
Loxton has the highest enrolment of 390 participants, followed by Renmark (370), Berri (315) and Waikerie (220).
Janice Sawade, the chief instructor at Loxton, said the enrolment figure at Loxton is about 20 less than last year.
Mrs Sawade said that drop is in line with a trend that has been apparent since a peak enrolment at Loxton of around 470 children in 1992.
She said there are 25 participants in the life saving award classes being held at the Loxton pool including one candidate attempting the top level course.
