Jenny's
still making a splash
By Luke Dean
NURIOOTPA Jenny Klose of Nuriootpa has made a splash in local swimming circles for the past 18 years, and the well known swimming instructor shows no signs of leaving the pool side in the near future.
Mrs Klose follows a hectic schedule of both paid and volunteer work, both in and out of the water, all of which provides her with a "sense of satisfaction".
"As children achieve their self esteem develops. There is an obvious lift in their self confidence," Mrs Klose said.
Included in Mrs Klose's program is the annual VacSwim program which runs during the school holidays, school swimming classes, as well as classes she coordinates at the Tanunda Recreation Centre.
And the tireless personality has also worked with physically and mentally disabled children in the water at the Recreation Centre in liaison with the Education Department, a task she finds "very rewarding" as the "results are extremely exciting and encouraging".
Jenny also runs specialised courses to train instructors and junior instructors, as well as being heavily involved in the Royal Life Saving Society's Basic Resuscitation program. The program teaches pupils swimming survival skills as well as the skills necessary to save a life in an unfortunate circumstance.
Mrs Klose strongly supported the program and believed it to be so crucial that basic resuscitation skills should be included in secondary school curriculums.
"Everyone should have some kind of knowledge of how to rescue and survive," she said.
Her opinion is reinforced when you consider the drownings that have occurred around the country this summer.
Mrs Klose recommended that all parents should let their children have the opportunity to learn these skills and also encouraged parents themselves to undertake a course on how to 'swim and survive'.
"It's never too late to learn the art of swimming. I teach a large number of adults aged 30 to 40 and my oldest pupil has been 78," Mrs Klose said.
