Children go for lessons at the lake

VACSWIM '98 started with a splash in Naracoorte on Monday with 251 children taking part in the learn-to-swim program.

Naracoorte swimming lake was a sea of arms and legs as children ranging in swimming ability from beginner to advanced participated in the first session of the two-week program.

The enrolment figure is slightly higher than last year's 240 and instructor-in-charge Matthew McConnell said he was very happy with this year's group.

Many of the children were from the Naracoorte district with some on holidays from Adelaide also taking part.

Most of the children will finish the program on Thursday but those tackling more advanced levels will finish on January 17.

Many of the children are learning to swim for the first time at level one, while a handful of older, more experienced children are going for their bronze levels.

Bronze levels are a couple of strands down from becoming a qualified lifesaver.
