Children learn
water safety
"Jump like a kangaroo, push off from the wall, swim towards me!"
These are just some of the instructions called across the water as children learn pool safety the full way at Mannum.
About 110 young people are participating in the holiday project, VacSwim '98, running at the high school pool until January 15.
Ranging in age from about, five to 13, children are building confidence while having fun in the water, while learning some practical lessons.
Vacswim instructor Cecily Graetz said activities for younger participants were based oil enjoying themselves while older students practised long-distance and survival swimming. River safety was also taught.
"It's been good. I think pool safety has certainly improved with more parents gaining awareness Mrs Graetz said.
"It's been good to see the number of parents who stay to watch their children do the lessons.''
Assisted by HomeStart Vacswim is a Statewide program involving about, 26,000 participants and 800 instructors.
Sun safety is also encouraged at the lessons, with children urged to put oil sunscreen,
cover up and try to stay in the shade.
Mannum sessions run daily from 9.15am to 1.15pm and children have been encouraged to attend and
participate, whether or not they have enrolled.
